Let us praise holy Luke, the star of the Church, herald of piety and proclaimer of mysteries; for the Word Who alone knows the secrets of hearts has chosen him with Paul as a teacher of the nations.

Dr. Luke was born in Antioch, studied philosophy, medicine & art. He was one of the Seventy and walked with the risen Lord along with Cleopas on the way to Emmaus (Lk. 24). After Pentecost, Luke returned to Antioch. It was there that he became a fellowlaborer with Paul. After the Apostle Paul's martyrdom, Luke preached in Italy, Dalmatia, Macedonia and elsewhere. He wrote three icons of Mary, the Mother of God, as well as of Peter & Paul. He was hung from an olive tree in Thebes at the age of 84. His wonderworking relics were later taken to Constantinople by Emperor Constantius.

This Icon is by the hand of a priest who wishes to be anonymous and is on the Royal Doors at St. John the Baptist Russian Orthodox Church, Conemaugh, Pennsylvania.
