May 8th
Troparion
(Tone 1)
Through thee the divine likeness was securely preserved, O Mother Emilia; for thou didst carry the cross and follow Christ. By example and precept thou didst teach us to ignore the body because it is perishable, and to attend to the concerns of the undying soul. Therefore, doth thy soul rejoice with the angels.

She was the mother of St Basil the Great, St. Macrina, St. Gregory of Nyssa and St. Peter of Sebaste. She had wanted to remain a life-long virgin, but was forced to marry. She bore ten children. One died in infancy. The nine she so thoroughly grounded in Christian discipleship that at least four became recognized Saints in the Church, and all were faithful servants of the Lord and his Church. She founded a monastery in her old age, where she lived with her daughter Macrina, and where she entered into rest in the Lord on May 8th, 375. Her  scroll reads: "To Thee, O Lord, I give the firstfruits and the tithe of my womb." She is patron to those named Emily.
